The Secret of Life — Discovery of DNA Structure

The Secret of Life — Discovery of DNA Structure

Fifty years ago, James Watson and Francis Crick announced to patrons in a Cambridge pub that they had just discovered the secret of life. Their discovery was that the DNA double helix explained how cells divide and develop. Yet it was not enlightened genius alone that propelled Watson and Crick toward this fundamental revelation. In addition they were building on the work of other scientists and a fortuitous (and un-acknowledged at the time) collaboration with Rosalind Franklin, a British X-Ray crystallographer, was of crucial help in this great achievement. All 50 Secrets of the Sequence videos have an accompanying classroom-tested lesson that encourages students to further explore the video topics. Each lesson includes background information, state and national science standards, discussion questions and answers, teacher notes and an activity that will ensure a hands-on, “minds-on” experience. True, and one scientist, either Watson or Crick, wrote a book titled, The Double Helix. In this he often made derogatory statements regarding Rosalind Franklin. Rosalind had died of cancer years before due to exposure to x-rays therefore she was unable to defend her honor.

In the description it says Watson and Crick collaborating with Rosalind Franklin but in actuality they werent. Franklin’s xray crystallography was actually used without Franklin knowing about it. Also they didnt give her any credit which in today’s world known as plagiarism

The x-ray crystallography wasn’t how they descovered dna was involved in inheritance. It was all about the transfer of sulphide from one nucleus to another that prove it was DNA. Sulphur makes up the di-sulphide bridges in de-oxy ribonucleic acid.

Well I haven’t gotten to 5:56 yet. But Rosalind Franklin’s crystollographic x-ray images that proved for Watson that there was a helical structure were not believed to prove that same thing to Franklin herself. In fact, Watson once got close to a serious physical encounter with Franklin because she was bothered by his unwelcomed insistence that the molecule was in fact helical. To be fair, she had earlier believed in a helical structure, but at this point was insisting against it.

Something like 75% of American commercial corn has had some genetic manipulation done to it. Some corn is actually labeled as a pesticide thanks to gene manipulation. That’s great! (sarcasm). Kill bugs and eat the kernels…..hmm delicious!

at 5:56 The speaker is grossly mistaken by saying that Watson was the first to know that the x-ray image 51, was a double helix, R. Franklin who took the image would have known immediately. SHE discovered that DNA was in a double helix.
